Anyone who knows me is aware I frequently state that when we get a plumbers licence, we didn’t also get given a pair of Superman’s glasses with plumbers X-ray vision.
Plumbing infrastructure is 90% concealed in walls, floors and underground. The ability for a plumber to transform into Superman and see-through physical objects would be an obvious solution when you have problems.
As Plumbers and Electricians are only too aware many people think we possess plumbers X-ray vision when it comes to solving their concealed infrastructure issues. There is always a sense of irony in the fact that people will make multiple visits to a doctor to get a diagnosis of a health problem. But believe we only need one visit to diagnose a complex issue in their plumbing, gas or electrical infrastructure.
Looking after your plumbing infrastructure can be challenging when most of the infrastructure is concealed. Most people are vaguely aware there are water pipes and drainage pipes somewhere that connects to their bathrooms, kitchen and laundry.
The vague awareness only transforms into reality when the infrastructure stops working. Aleaking water pipe or ablocked toilet suddenly create a perception that something is wrong somewhere.
That’s when you call a plumber to investigate. Often this is where the “fun” starts as we arrive at your home to see exactly what you can see. This means we have to start investigating. Depending on the problem investigating is a process of elimination.
This is why I say Superman’s X-ray vision would solve so many problems for us. Ultimately all we can call upon as Plumbers is our knowledge and experience to eliminate possibilities. Yes, there is the technology we can use but as yet no plumbers x-ray vision. The limitations of the technology are endless with equipment such as a CCTV drain camera being useless to use on a blocked drain as ultimately all we can see is dirty water.
Here at Whywait Plumbing, I believe we have invested wisely over the years in technology and continue to do so. Equipment such as CCTV drain cameras, sonar locators, pipe tracers, gas detectors, leak detection equipment and much more. Much of the investigative technology we utilise derives from medical technology, so it is continuously evolving.
I’m looking forward to the day when we can access affordable portable X-ray or sonar equipment that will allow us to see clearly the location of infrastructure in your walls, floors and underground.
Ultimately I still believe its the experience and patience of our Plumbers to investigate your problems and eliminate the possibilities before we jackhammer up your floor or smash open your walls.
Plumbing guarantees are a source of constant confusion. A guarantee of the fixtures and fittings installed is always carried by the manufacturer not the plumber who installed them. Ultimately all a plumber can guarantee is his workmanship and service levels.

Can my gas BBQ explode is a question we get asked every summer as we all love a barbecue its part of our lifestyle. But every year far too many people suffer severe burns and injuries.
Most barbecues have been lying around, unused over the winter months and as soon as the warm weather returns we all fire up the barbecue without a second thought as to whether its safe to use.
Gas bottles with their regulator and hose connections are the most common potential for leaking LPG gas to literally explode when you are using it.
Before using your barbecue this summer we recommend that you spend 5 minutes to carry out the following:
check all your connections are tight
check the gas hose from the bottle to the barbecue to make sure it has not perished
a soapy water spray leak test on the gas bottle, gas regulator, rubber hose and hose connections
Above is a short video that will run you through seven simple checks before using your barbecue that shows all of the tests listed above including a soapy water test.
Once you have checked your connections are tight and checked the rubber gas hose for any signs of being perished please ensure you carry out a soapy water leak of all the connections.
You can create soapy water in a bowl with soap and brush it on, or preferably use a spray bottle where you put some gel soap into a spray bottle with water and spray all of the connections.
If a leak is present, the soapy water will produce bubbles indicating the location of the leak. If a leak is detected, you may need to disconnect the joint and clean the mating surfaces. Then re-connect and re-check for leaks again. If you continue to see leaks then it is likely that fitting needs replacing before using the barbecue.
A gas leak on a barbecue can spread very quickly as you can see in the photo above which is why you should follow these basic rules:
never use a gas barbecue indoors or in a confined space
do not connect or disconnect a LPG cylinder in the vicinity of a naked flame and always shut off the cylinder valve before disconnecting from the barbecue
do not use a gas barbecue in windy conditions as if the flames are blown out the LPG can accumulate and create a potential explosion
LPG gas cylinders seldom explode because they all come with a pressure relief valve so if there is a problem with heating up, the relief valve automatically allows the LPG to vent. Consequently rather than exploding the venting LPG in the worst possible scenario can ignite if there is an ignition source and you have a spectacular plume of flame going upwards. The cylinder will in a short time run out of gas and the flame will extinguish and this is why you always use a barbecue outside and away from the house in a well-ventilated area separated from ignition sources.
Remember if you smell gas always turn off the valve at the gas bottle. All gas installation work must be undertaken by a licensed gasfitter so if you have any questions contact Whywait Plumbing Services now.
The plumbers at Whywait Plumbing are constantly bewildered by some people think if they ignore the smell of gas that it will go away. Gas leaks are never something you should ignore, even if you perceive it to be that you only have a small gas leak. A suspected gas leak can be dangerous and you should deal with it immediately.
If you smell that distinctive gas smell inside your home we recommend the following:
Evacuate everyone from the house and open all of your doors and windows
leave the house and turn off gas at the meter (or LP Gas cylinder if that’s what you’re using).
If you can and it’s safe to do, switch the power off at the electricity meter box too, so electrical appliances can’t generate a spark.
Then move to a safe distance and call your plumber or local gas authority (see below).
If you smell that distinctive gas smell outside your home then we recommend the following:
Immediately turn off or remove all sources of ignition such as cigarettes, mobile phones, and any outdoor electrical equipment in the immediate are
Call the 000 emergency number and inform you have a gas leak and where you suspect the leak is plus any other relevant information that you have observed
Turn off the gas at your meter
Your gas meter is usually located at the side or front of your home and to turn off do the following:
Turn the valve at the gas meter to the OFF position
If the OFF position is not obvious or has worn off over time then generally the valve is off when the handle is at right angles or to the gas inlet pipe.
Modern gas appliances are almost fool proof but like all appliance they must be maintained. Signs to look for and observe that may indicate that your gas appliances may not be operating correctly include:
fluctuating flames on your cook top
you are running out of hot water
you are running out of gas
faint smell of gas
sudden increase in gas bill
hissing noises from pipe joints
flames are yellow or red
If you observe any of these appearances or problems then turn off the appliance and contact Whywait Plumbing immediately for a gas-fitter to be sent to your home. Because if nothing else you and your family may be at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Finally never ever attempt to fix a gas leak yourself. It must always be undertaken by a licensed gas-fitter. Repairing a gas leak must always be undertaken by a licensed gas fitter with a gas certificate of compliance issued where pipes, fittings or appliances are modified or replaced. Very simply all these requirements are the law, they are not voluntary options.
When it comes to installing, repairing and maintaining your gas pipes & appliances you can depend on the professionalism, expertise and experience you receive from the experienced gas fitting experts at Whywait Plumbing.
