Gold Coast water pressure changes more than you think

Gold Coast water pressure can feel “fine”, then suddenly not. That doesn’t mean you’re imagining it. Something has changed.

💥Sometimes it’s a demand issue at the council supply side of your water meter.

💥Sometimes it’s a PRV.

💥Sometimes it’s a slight restriction in a tap or valve that gets worse. Quietly.

💥Sometimes it’s a pump or balancing valve issue in a high-rise building

💥Sometimes it’s the rainwater tanks and associated pump infrastructure failing

This page provides you with the numbers, quick tests, and the next steps.

Gold Coast pressure numbers you should know

✅ City of Gold Coast aims for a minimum of 220 kPa at the property connection point.

✅ Network pressure can vary from 220 kPa to around 900 kPa.

⚠️ Council tries to keep it below 900 kPa to reduce leaks and bursts.

The big rule inside your home

✅ The maximum static pressure at any outlet in a building should not exceed 500 kPa (except fire services).

If those numbers feel abstract, that’s normal. But they matter. A lot.

Always be aware that high water pressure can damage valves and taps and can cause pipes to burst.

Low pressure vs low flow

These two get mixed up every day. Fair enough.

Low pressure = not enough push (energy) in the water to overcome elevation and friction losses.
Low flow = not enough volume per minute, usually from restrictions or low pressure, so the water doesn’t deliver what’s needed.”

Both cause miserable showers.

Different fixes, though. That’s the trap.

🪣DIY test: the 9-litre bucket check

This is simple. It’s also genuinely useful.

✅ Use the outdoor tap closest to your water meter.

✅ Turn it on fully.

✅ Time how long it takes to fill a 9-litre bucket.

⚠️ If it takes much longer than 30 seconds, you may have low pressure or low flow.

What “not normal” looks like in real homes

Often low pressure / low flow

✅ Shower goes weak when another tap runs

✅ One side is worse (hot, weaker than cold)

✅ Kitchen tap is slow, but others feel ok

✅ Toilet takes ages to refill

✅ Outdoor tap barely fills a bucket

Often high pressure (damaging pressure)

⚠️ Pipes bang when taps shut

⚠️ Taps drip constantly

⚠️ Toilet inlet valves keep failing

⚠️ Flex hoses burst or balloon

⚠️ Little leaks appear… then bigger ones

High pressure can feel “great”, especially in the shower.

Until it breaks something at 10 pm. Of course.

Common causes we see on the Gold Coast

✅ Partially closed meter valve (happens more than you’d think)

✅ Blocked aerators, strainers, and shower heads

✅ Faulty or blocked PRV (pressure reducing valve)

✅ Tempering valve restrictions (hot water side)

✅ Hidden leaks (gardens, walls, under slabs)

✅ Old pipe restrictions (older materials, internal build-up)

✅ Undersized pipework or rough plumbing design

Sometimes it’s just a minor, silly blockage.

Sometimes it’s three issues stacked. Annoying combo.

Pressure reducing valves (PRVs): when they matter most

A PRV protects your home from high mains pressure delivered through your council meter. It also steadies pressure swings, creating a balanced delivery pressure.

✅ Signs your PRV needs checking as they should be checked and serviced annually:

❌ Pressure drops suddenly

❌ Pressure comes and goes

❌ Pipes bang (water hammer)

❌ Taps and toilet valves often fail

❌ You’ve renovated and aren’t sure what was fitted

A PRV can also cause low pressure. Especially if it’s blocked or set too low.

When it might be the council supply-side

If your neighbours are also experiencing weak pressure, it may be due to the council’s network demand. Or maintenance. Or a local event.

City of Gold Coast publishes the network ranges and targets. City of Gold Coast

If you need to report a supply issue, use the City contact channels. City of Gold Coast

(If it’s only your home experiencing low pressure, it’s usually internal plumbing.)

Not on the Gold Coast? Tweed + Scenic Rim notes

We service Tweed and Scenic Rim too.
But the “who handles what” can differ.

Tweed Shire Council (NSW)

✅ Tweed provides a Mains Pressure and Flow Rate Enquiry form. Tweed Shire Council+1

✅ The form lists Water Admin enquiries on (02) 6670 2460. Tweed Shire Council

If the street is weak, start with Council. If it’s just your property, call us.

Scenic Rim Regional Council (QLD)

✅ Scenic Rim Council says evidence of water approval is required via Urban Utilities in reticulated areas. Scenic Rim Regional Council

✅ They list Urban Utilities on 13 26 57. Scenic Rim Regional Council

Gold Coast Water Pressure FAQs – Your Questions Answered

The City of Gold Coast aims for a minimum pressure of 220 kPa at the connection point. Network pressure can vary up to around 900 kPa.

Maximum static pressure at outlets should not exceed 500 kPa.

Usually, a local restriction. Aerators and strainers block easily.

Often, a tempering valve restriction. Sometimes it’s the hot water unit.

Yes. If it fails or blocks, pressure can drop hard. That is why we recommend annual testing and servicing.

Do the 9-litre bucket test. Then compare one tap vs whole house.

We offer same-day service for urgent leaks, depending on prior bookings and the time required for each job. Call us on (07) 5580 4311 to book now.
